Dennis Maurer is now acting mayor for the City of Knoxville after Bob Johnson’s resignation was approved by aldermen last night.
July 2015 is when Maurer stepped into the mayor pro-tem role while Johnson dealt with health issues.

Johnson formally submitted his resignation letter on August 15.

Aldermen after approving the resignation turned to vote in Maurer as acting mayor.

Maurer reminded council of the accomplishment’s of Johnson’s tenure, including a myriad of commercial projects that have come to fruition including Casey’s General Store, Dollar General and Love’s Travel Stop.

Maurer tells WGIL he remembers when Johnson became acting mayor, leading to his own appointment as second ward alderman.

“And during that time I know he put a lot of effort into trying to get Courtyard Estates of Knoxville here, ” Maurer says. “That’s the one thing that I think he worked the hardest on at least in my tenure on the city council.”

Last night was also Maurer’s last meeting as a voting alderman.

He announced his intention to resign as an alderman at the next City Council meeting.

He also says he’s undecided as to whether he will run for mayor in the May 2017 municipal election.
