CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago authorities have reopened an investigation into a 2010 shooting involving a police service weapon that left the officer’s childhood friend severely injured.
The details involving Officer Patrick Kelly’s gun are disputed.
On Jan. 12, 2010, Michael LaPorta was shot in the head at Kelly’s apartment.
The men had known each other since grade school.
Police classified it as a suicide attempt, relying on Kelly’s testimony.
But LaPorta tells The Chicago Tribune he wasn’t suicidal.
No prints were on the gun.
The Independent Police Review Authority reopened the investigation in March.
Police are also reviewing the case.
Questions are being raised about Kelly’s record.
The newspaper reports Kelly has faced at least 27 investigations into his on-duty and off-duty conduct, from allegations of kicking suspects to making false arrests.
He’s been disciplined once.
Kelly declined comment.
