WHEATON, Ill. (AP) — A Chicago area military museum is set to reopen this summer after nearly a year of renovations and an $8 million redesign.
The First Division Museum in Wheaton is scheduled to open Aug. 26.
It chronicles the Army’s 1st Infantry Division, known as the “Big Red One” for its distinctive shoulder patch.
It was established in 1917, making it the oldest division in the armed forces.
The (Arlington Heights) Daily Herald reports executive director Paul Herbert, a retired colonel, has helped collect artifacts and stories for years.
Among the exhibits is the story of Ross McGinnis, a 19-year-old private first class who won the Medal of Honor posthumously.
He gave up his life to save four others from a grenade blast inside a Humvee about a decade ago in Iraq.
