Laurence “Larry” William Owens, 95, of Galesburg, died at 2:35 a.m. Friday, September 01, 2017 in the Care Center of Abingdon, Abingdon.Laurence was born February 2, 1922 in Galesburg, the son of Louis William and M. May Story Owens. He married Ruth Effie Van Fleet on January 8, 1951 in Springfield, IL.
She preceded him in death on June 5, 2009. Larry is also survived by one son, Ned (Kathy) Owens of Abingdon; two daughters, Laura (Jim) Aldus of Galesburg and Nancy Owens of Eugene, OR; nine grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, and one step great grandchild. Along with his wife and parents, Larry was preceded in death by three brothers, John, Lyle, and James; and three sisters, Margaret, Mary, and Kathleen.
Larry served in the US Army. He worked as an engineer for the railroad for 48 years, retiring in 1990. He was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church; a lifelong member of the YMCA and lived at Lake Bracken and later, Naples, FL where he was an avid golfer.
Cremation rites will be accorded and no services are planned. Private family burial of cremated remains will be at a later date. Arrangements have been entrusted to Watson-Thomas Funeral Home and Crematory, Galesburg. Memorials may be made to the Galesburg YMCA and Care Center of Abingdon.
