Deaths of couple found after farm fire was murder-suicide

MALTA, Ill. (AP) – Authorities say a man whose body was found with that of his wife after a fire at their DeKalb County farm had fatally shot his wife before he set their home on fire and turned the gun on himself.

The (DeKalb) Daily Chronicle reports that the sheriff’s department has determined that early Sunday, 74-year-old William M. Kreda shot 75-year-old Marjory Kreda in the head in the couple’s bedroom before he set fire to a barn and other buildings at their Malta farm. They say Kreda then set the house on fire before he returned to the bedroom and shot himself in the head. Both bodies were in their bed.

Sheriff Roger Scott says investigators haven’t determined why the husband shot his wife and that they may never know.
