Ice storm warning for northern Illinois, parts of Indiana

CHICAGO (AP) – The National Weather Service says an ice storm swept across northern Illinois is expected to end earlier than expected.

Meteorologists forecast the storm would move through the area late Tuesday, bringing treacherous road conditions with widespread precipitation from 11 p.m. to midnight.

Though the storm will have mostly moved on by the Wednesday morning commute, the weather service warns drivers to give themselves extra time to navigate potentially slick roads.

Ice accumulations of one-tenth to four-tenths of an inch are expected to make travel dangerous. Many suburban Chicago schools and libraries closed early Tuesday and were expected to open late Wednesday because of the storm.

The weather service indicated more rain is possible Wednesday and Thursday, but by Friday highs are expected to hover in the teens.

Northwestern Indiana will also see icy conditions.
