Smoke inhalation preliminary cause of death in Sterling fire

STERLING, Ill. (AP) – Smoke inhalation is being given as the preliminary cause of death of three people killed in an apartment fire in northern Illinois. Thirteen-year-old Celina Serrano and her cousin, 8-year-old Shayla Walker of Davenport, Iowa were killed in the fire early Monday in Sterling. Also killed was 49-year-old Carrie Hose, was also killed. The mother of Celina Serrano, 35-year-old Alma Walker, and a second daughter, 12-year-old Teleah Serrano are hospitalized. Walker is reported in critical condition. Whiteside County Coroner Joe McDonald says autopsies were performed Tuesday on the victims. He says the results are preliminary because the toxicology results are pending. Authorities say a cause of the fire hasn’t been determined.
