The long-time search for a new superintendent for the Knoxville School District #202 has come to an end.

In a special board meeting on Friday, the Board of Education approved the hiring of Geoff Schoonover as the district’s new superintendent.

Mr. Schoonover has been an educator for 30 years, previously he served as the Superintendent at Cornell CCSD #426, and as the Superintendent at Windsor CUSD #1.

He also was also a principal and teacher in McLean County Unit #5 Schools and a teacher at Villa Grove Schools in Douglas County.

He was raised in rural Bloomington, Illinois before he went on to earn his bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education at Millikin University, and a Master’s Degree in Education – Educational Administration, from Illinois State University. He has also received his specialist degree from Illinois State University in Educational Leadership.

“I am excited and honored to be able to serve the Knoxville community as the Superintendent of Schools. Knoxville #202 is an outstanding district and I am confident that we can build upon the incredible work already in place,” Schoonover said in a press release. “I value clear, honest, and ongoing communication and believe this is essential to moving the district forward to help ALL students achieve their personal excellence.”

District 202 has been without a permanent superintendent since Steve Wilder left the district for Sycamore District 427. News of that hire broke one year from Sunday.

Since July 1 of 2020, the school district has had Joe Burgess fill the role of superintendent on an interim basis.

Schoonover will begin on July 1, 2021.
