Galesburg dropbox for mail-in votes open after Pritzker signs bill

Voters who requested vote-by-mail ballots for the municipal elections on Tuesday in Galesburg can return those to the dropbox in front of City Hall.

This is the same red and blue box that received mail-by-votes for the 2020 Presidential Election.

Knox County voters will be able to drop their votes off at a similar box in front of the courthouse starting Monday at 8 a.m.

There wasn’t the legal framework to even allow drop boxes for mail-in ballots for these elections until Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed a bill on Friday, which makes drop boxes permanent and expands curbside voting.

Pritzker said of the bill signing that “There are hundreds of active efforts to undermine the right to vote in nearly every state – the most horrific of which signed into law by Georgia’s governor – but here in Illinois, we hope to lead the way in strengthening access to the ballot so residents can have their voices heard.”

You can also vote early on Monday at City Hall, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. It’s also possible to register and then vote at City Hall either tomorrow or on Election Day.

A government-issued ID is helpful but not required.

By law, the drop boxes are secured by locks and can only be opened by election authority personnel.

Those who champion drop boxes say they are a convenient option for voters who have concerns trusting the Postal Service. It can also make it easier for people with disabilities or health issues to cast ballots.
