Galesburg man helps a friend pack – then robs her

Galesburg Police last Friday afternoon (March 25th) responded to a report of a burglary in the 500 block of Lincoln Street. Police met with a female victim who said the night before, she was packing up her belongings with the help of a male friend. During the process, the male friend was going through the belongings of the victim’s ex-boyfriend. The victim said she fell asleep, and when she woke up the following morning, numerous items were gone: an Xbox, a stereo system, numerous video games, clothing, and a 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche. The male friend was identified as 34-year old Billy Byrd of Galesburg. The victim told police she believed Byrd “took the truck because he allegedly stole her vehicle and sold it…..she believed (he) is going to sell the truck to get money to repay her for her car,” according to police reports. Later that day, officers responded to Pine Street where Byrd was taken into custody due to a Knox County Warrant. He was also in possession of the vehicle’s title which he also stole from the residence on Lincoln Street. The SUV had a shattered window and the steering column was removed exposing wires. Byrd was additionally charged with Theft of a Motor Vehicle, Possession of a Stolen Title, and Criminal Damage to Property.
