Furrow a 3-time state qualifier for Galesburg girls swim team; Hinshaw advances for Mon-Rose

Sophomore Lily Furrow advanced to state in two individual events and one relay to lead the Galesburg High School girls swim team at Saturday’s IHSA Sectional on Saturday at United Township in East Moline.

Furrow advanced to state by winning the 100 yard butterfly (58.04 seconds) and finishing second by qualifying time in the 50 yard free (23.93 seconds). Her time of 58.04 seconds in the 100 fly broke the previous school record of 58.17 set by Danielle Hulick in 1999.

Rebecca Hinshaw, a freshman from Monmouth-Roseville, advanced to state by edging out Furrow in the 50 free with a time of 23.91.

Also advancing to state for the Streaks was the 200 medley relay team of Macie Nelson, Allie Warren, Furrow and Olivia Owen which finishing first with a time of 1:51.31.

The IHSA Girls State Swimming & Diving Championships are Friday and Saturday at FMC Natatorium in Westmont.

Moline won the sectional with 284 points, while Dunlap was second with 248 Galesburg third with 214, Peoria Richwoods fourth with 167 and Monmouth-Roseville fifth with 158.

“The whole team competed well,” said Galesburg coach Ray VanHootegem. “Between the conference meet and sectionals, it has been a great end to the season, with one more meet later this week.”
