Johnson, who worked in various roles for the city from 1987-2015, died March 19 at his Galesburg home after a long illness. He established the forestry division in 1996 and helped Galesburg receive several awards from the Tree City U.S.A. Awards and Tree Growth Awards.

Ann Pennington, chairperson and longtime member of the Galesburg Tree Commission, said Johnson selected a Brandywine Maple tree to be planted in his memory days before his death. Pennington credited Don Miles, interim director of Parks and Recreation/Parks Superintendent, with securing funding for the tree and a prominent location in Standish Park.

The tree is located on the north side of Standish Park, directly across from the Tompkins Street entrance to Galesburg City Hall.

The Brandywine Maple is a cross between two other fall favorites, October Glory and Autumn Flame. It produces bright red fall foliage that turns purple-red later in the season.

Johnson’s wife Debbie and their daughter Ashley Hess joined Pennington in making remarks during the ceremony Friday. Also in attendance with his brother Craig Johnson.
