If you’ve made your way around Galesburg’s Public Square this week, you’ve likely noticed the tall trailer with a camera perched high above the northwest corner.
A WGIL Facebook follower asked: “Hey, do you know what the camera setup on the Square is being used for?”
We turned to Cathy St. George, Assistant City Manager and Director of Engagement/Public Information Officer for the City of Galesburg, who said it’s a mobile security camera on a trailer, owned by the Galesburg Police Department and moved as needed.
It was most recently placed in the northwest corner of the Public Square at the request of organizers for the Oct. 18 No Kings Rally to provide extra security during the event.
The police department uses the camera proactively at community gatherings to enhance safety when large crowds are present. Other recent examples include the Charlie Kirk vigil on Oct. 10 and annual events like Railroad Days.
The unit is temporary and relocated based on need.
