Knox County property owners are waiting longer than usual for their 2025 real estate tax bills, and County Treasurer Robin Davis wants residents to know why — and what to expect next.
Davis announced this week that the mailing of 2025 tax bills, payable in 2026, is currently delayed. Under Illinois law, the Treasurer’s Office cannot generate or mail bills until the County Clerk completes what is called the “extension process” — the calculation of specific tax rates for each taxing district. That work is still in progress.
“My office is fully prepared to mail the bills within approximately three weeks of receiving the finalized data from the Clerk,” Davis said. “We understand residents need these bills to plan their finances, and we are standing by to complete our portion of the process as soon as the files are rolled to us.”
Knox County Clerk Scott Erickson told WGIL his office is working to get the information to the treasurer as soon as possible.
How the real estate tax cycle works
Davis outlined the three-step process that must be completed before bills can be mailed:
- Step 1 — Assessment: The Knox County Supervisor of Assessments establishes property values.
- Step 2 — Rate calculation: The Knox County Clerk calculates specific tax rates for each taxing district. This step is currently in progress.
- Step 3 — Billing and collection: The Knox County Treasurer generates and mails bills and collects payments.
What happens once bills are mailed
Once the Treasurer’s Office receives the finalized data from the Clerk, bills will be mailed within approximately three weeks. The first installment due date will be set at least 30 days after the mailing date, as required by Illinois law.
Davis said her office is committed to distributing funds to local schools and taxing bodies as quickly as possible after collections begin, in order to minimize any financial impact from the delay.
A follow-up announcement with specific mailing and installment due dates will be issued once the Treasurer’s Office receives the tax file from the County Clerk.
