There appears to be an increased demand for new housing developments in the Maple City.
City Administrator Lew Steinbrecher tells WGIL that the Monmouth Townhomes development revealed a huge demand for rental family housing in Monmouth.
“One of the bright things that have come out of that… They, not only, have had enough people to rent all of the units but have a waiting list that is over 100 [families] long,” Steinbrecher said in a Tuesday interview. “It bodes well that there is a demand for housing here in Monmouth. In fact, we’d like to sit down with the developer and talk about maybe a second project, given what we know to be the demand now for rental housing.”
The Monmouth Townhomes project saw 44 residences built on seven acres of property south of Kimberly Drive, near the AmericInn and Arby’sin Monmouth.
The project was built during the pandemic, with Aldermen in March of 2020 approving the term sheet with the developer.
Steinbrecher adds that there could also be a market for owner-occupied homes in Monmouth.
“We knew that the rental housing market was strong here and I also believe that that the single-family owner-occupied housing… if we could get somebody in here to build some new houses, I’m confident that we have a strong enough market that people would, not only, rent new units but they’d also buy new homes if we could get them built.”
