Streaks Spotlight: Senior fall athletes share what fuels their fire

Former Galesburg High School girls basketball coach Evan Massey shares his insights on the game and other topics through his Massey Basketball blog, now featured here on WGIL.

I wanted to shine some light on Galesburg High School’s senior fall athletes. I reached out to all the GHS seniors out for a fall sport to give us some insight into school, sports, and life. 


Sophia Kisler – Volleyball

What’s your favorite class and/or teacher?

My all-time favorite class is Mrs. Hill’s science class.

Who was an older GHS athlete you looked up to?

A Streaks athlete who I look up to is my sister, Antonia Kisler because of her hard work and dedication every single day.

Is there a quote that inspires you?

A quote that I use for motivation is “Anything worth doing is worth overdoing. Moderation is for cowards,” from Shane Patton.

Pre-games do you have a favorite “pump up” song?

My favorite pump-up song is “Welcome to the Jungle” by Guns N’ Roses.

What is your favorite post game meal?

Cinnamon Toast Crunch

What is the best part of being an athlete?

The best part about being an athlete is seeing your team’s hard work pay off by winning games.

This will be a great season if …

This will be a great season because so many of our players have put in the extra work this off season to become better and this has really improved our all-around play.

If you had to choose, which would you do… sky dive, cave diving, mountain climbing, or bull riding?

I would bull ride because I’m claustrophobic and scared of heights.

 

Demetrius Watson- Football

Math(Algebra)

Who was an older GHS athlete you looked up to?

Kenny Ward

Favorite saying that motivates you?

Practice makes better because nothing is perfect.

Favorite pre-game “pump up” music?

First day out

Favorite post-game meal?

Peanut butter sandwich

Best part of playing sports?

The opportunity and the option to change your life for the better.

This season will be successful if …

If me and my teammates learn how to communicate better and keeps each other up.

Which would you choose to do – sky dive, cave dive, bull ride, or mountain climb?

Sky diving because it’s more thrilling. If I could, I would pick all of them because you only have 1 life to live.

Our team comes together and puts it all out on the court

Bradley Eaton- Football

Favorite Class?

I loved physical science sophomore year.

Older GHS athlete who inspired you?

Cobe Ramirez.

Quote that inspires you?

“Why show up if you’re gonna do half the work”.

Favorite pre-game “pump-up” song?

Dreams and nightmare by Meek Mills.

Favorite post-game meal?

Chicken Alfredo.

Best part about playing sports?

Being competitive.

Trust each other.

Sky diving.

LaVant Ritenour- Football

Physics

Asher Whitcomb

Quote that inspires you?

The journey.

This will be a great season if our team can all work as a team and not as individuals.

What would you choose – sky diving, cave diving, bull riding or mountain climbing?

I would go mountain climbing.

 

Drew Hickey- Football

Favorite class?

Physics with Mr. Baxter Junior year

Former GHS athlete who inspired you?

Sam Satisky

Quote that inspires you?

For the quote I would like to say something that my grandpa says but it probably wouldn’t be appropriate so I will go with out work yesterday

Favorite pre-game “pump-up” song?

I like almost all of the songs they play but I don’t know the names for them.

Favorite post game meal?

Last year we would have ham or turkey sandwich’s and they were so good.

Best part of playing sports?

Creating an amazing bond with your teammates

This season will be successful if …

We all stick together and believe in each other

Which would you choose- sky diving, cave diving, bull riding, or mountain climbing?

100% sky diving. I have wanted to at some point in my life. Cave diving would be way to scary for me, I get claustrophobic just seeing videos of people doing that.

Lily Furrow- Swimming

Favorite classes/teachers?

I really liked any math class I took, but the one that stands out the most to me is Honors Algebra 1 I took in 8th grade.

Past Streak athletes you looked up to?

From all the years, Danielle Hulick. She has many of the school records in swim that are still up from the 90s. Having a connection to her makes me look up to her even more.

Saying or quote that motivates you?

Ray always says “MYB”, make yourself better. Most of the time, getting better is you doing the work and pushing yourself to the limits. You can’t get better if you don’t fight through the hard. You are the only one who can do that.

Favorite “pump up” music before meets?

I don’t really listen to a lot of music, but an artist I usually play before swim meets is Tate McRae. Her music gets me going.

Favorite post meet meal?

Any type of pasta. I love pasta.

Best part of being an athlete?

There are many benefits to being an athlete, but my favorite one is the connections you make through your sports. I do a club team in Galesburg and in Iowa. I have friends from many different places that I’ll always have a connection to.

This will be a great season if …

The season will be great no matter what, but what I want to happen this season is to break more records, retake a trip to state, and win conference again.

If had to choose – sky diving, cave diving, deep sea diving, or bull riding?

Out of all of those options, definitely skydiving. I’ve always thought it looked fun.
