City Matters: Galesburg touts ‘remarkable’ year of economic growth

Galesburg City Manager Eric Hanson joined WGIL’s Jay Redfern on Galesburg’s Morning News to preview tonight's City Council meeting, and also review the city's impressive year for economic development.

One of the primary topics on tap for discussion tonight is the city's proposal to lease a new street sweeper for $251,000. Hanson explained that leasing makes financial sense due to the wear and tear associated with such equipment, allowing the city to maintain effective and modern tools without a hefty upfront cost.

The conversation also touched on a TIF Redeveloper Agreement with Steve's Smith and Allen Garage, aimed at supporting the historic garage's operations while freeing up city-owned parking spots. Additionally, they discussed a routine tower lease renewal that would extend contracts and potentially increase revenue from tower rentals.

Hanson then highlighted Galesburg’s impressive economic growth in 2024, citing 326 new jobs and over $113 million in private investments from various sectors, including significant contributions from companies like Western Smokehouse, Graham Health and OSF Healthcare.
