On this episode of Galesburg’s Morning News, new Knox College head football coach Adam Gonzaga joins WGIL's Jay Redfern to discuss taking over the Prairie Fire program. Gonzaga, the 32nd head coach in program history, brings more than 30 years of college coaching experience, including stops at Stanford, the Naval Academy, and Lake Forest College, where his defense helped win a Midwest Conference title.
Gonzaga says Knox was the right fit for "quality of life" and the strong parallel between academics and athletics. He outlined his four pillars of success—academic, social, spiritual, and athletic—and his goal to build a "blue-collar" team identity defined by discipline, toughness, and resilience. He credits former coach Aaron Willits for leaving a solid foundation: "The cupboard is not bare."
Immediate priorities include establishing team standards, strength and conditioning, recruiting (with current players involved), and preparing for spring practice. Gonzaga measures early success by player retention, graduation rates, individual development, and community engagement—not just the scoreboard. He closed with a message to the community: "It's time to get excited. Be ready to be entertained."
