Pints for Polio fundraising event.
The Galesburg Sunrise and Noon Rotary Clubs will be holding a Pints for Polio fundraising event on Rotary International World Polio Day, Sunday, October 24 from 2 to 5 pm.
This event will be held at 156 East on Main Street in downtown Galesburg. It will include local celebrity Guest Bartenders competing for tips to be donated to the cause. Battles include Presidents Seamus Reilly of Sandburg College vs Andrew McGadney of Knox College; Barber Kyle Rohweder of Glory Days vs stylist Tania Gibbs of Buzz and Co.; and Rotarian Trent Cox vs. Lion Tiffany Springer. There will be a large Silent Auction and a 50/50 raffle drawing. A portion of the bar and food sales during the event will be donated, as well. Every dollar raised will be matched 2 to 1 by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
Rotary International joined the fight to eradicate Polio more than 35 years ago as a founding partner of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. Polio or poliomyelitis, is a paralyzing and potentially deadly infectious virus that spreads from person to person- most often children under age 5, typically through contaminated water. Cases of wild Polio remain only in Afghanistan and Pakistan, but the efforts must be continued everywhere to keep it from rising again.
