2 Chicago suburbs address downtown parking concerns

JOLIET, Ill. (AP)– Officials in two suburbs southwest of Chicago say they’re taking steps to modernize downtown parking and make it easier for drivers.

The city of Joliet will test out a new parking payment system in place while Plainfield is ready to add new spaces.

Joliet officials say problems were identified in a 2014 study that recommended better signs, increased meter costs and modernized meters. Joliet Parking Superintendent Thomas Schwerha says the city is studying the rate of parking payments.

For now, the city has an electronic parking kiosk downtown for a three-month pilot program.

In Plainfield, officials will add about 33 spaces to the downtown area.
