Play ball at Coach Jimmy Isaacson Field. Galesburg Council approves honor for longtime coach

An historic Galesburg baseball diamond is now named after a legendary late baseball coach.

The baseball field at H.T. Custer Park will now be known as Coach Jimmy Isaacson Field. Galesburg alderman Monday unanimously approved a resolution to honor the longtime coach.

Seventh Ward Alderman Steve Cheesman, a former Galesburg American Legion player and coach under Isaacson, read a proclamation citing the former coach’s long and impressive resume.

Isaacson coached baseball for 48 years — all in Galesburg — with stints for the Galesburg Post 285 Legion program, Carl Sandburg College, the Galesburg Pioneers and Knox College.

Members of the Isaacson family — his wife Pat, son Jami and his wife Julie and their daughter Jillian — were in attendance at Monday’s meeting.

A ceremony to dedicate the diamond in honor of Jimmy Isaacson will take place this summer.
