Judge rejects state motion to reconsider new trial for man

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (AP) – A central Illinois judge has rejected a state motion to reconsider granting a new trial to a man who has spent 27 years in prison for his father’s 1991 beating and stabbing death.

McLean County Judge Scott Drazewski rejected the motion during a hearing Friday for 52-year-old Donald Whalen. The judge last month ruled Whalen should receive a new trial in the killing of William Whalen, who was found stabbed more than 30 times and beaten with a pool cue in his downtown Bloomington bar.

The (Bloomington) Pantagraph reports Donald Whalen’s lawyers were in the process of posting bond for following the hearing. Whalen was to be fitted with an ankle monitor for mandated home confinement at his mother’s residence in Bloomington.
