Former Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack was confirmed yesterday in the U.S. Senate as ag secretary. Vilsack served the same role during the Obama Administration. Congresswoman Cheri Bustos says Vilsack, as the Biden Administration’s pick to head the USDA is a great choice and adds another ally to farmers in her district. “In our Congressional District, we’ve got one of the heaviest ethanol districts in the country,” Bustos said. “They’ve taken a real hit with the small refinery waivers that have been given out, almost indiscriminately, to huge oil companies. So we’ve got to restore the integrity to the renewable fuel standard. I think we will have a friend in Tom Vilsack, and I think we’ll have a friend in President Biden, and we’ll start getting that in the right place again.” The 70-year old Vilsack will now be tasked with helping farmers hit hardest by the Trump Administration trade wars and the coronavirus pandemic. During his confirmation hearing Vilsack said, “Today, the pandemic, racial justice, and equity and climate change must be our priorities.”
