The Prairie Fire softball team split a pair of non-conference games at Eureka on Wednesday. The teams each scored a run in the first inning of game one. The Red Devils tacked on another run in the fourth inning, but Maddie Poetzinger broke it open with a two-RBI double in the fifth. Knox scored three in the fifth and another in the fifth to take a 5-2 lead. Eureka scored twice in the fifth to cut into the Prairie Fire lead, but Knox responded with three in the seventh. The Red Devils scored two in the bottom of the seventh and brought the tying run to the plate with two outs, but Knox held on for the 8-6 victory.

In game two, Eureka scored twice in the third and once in the fifth to take a 3-0 lead. The Prairie Fire loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh, but came up just short.

Maddie Poetzinger led the team with four hits on the day. Haylee Carpenter and Liv Dunn added three hits apiece.

Ally Hyde threw a complete game for the win in game one, allowing two earned runs.

“I’m really proud of the team for playing so well in our first games back from Florida,” said head coach Erin Clark. “It was a great team win in game one and we came up just a little short in game two. This should get us ready for this weekend.”

Knox (3-11) returns to action as they host Mt. Mary on April 1.
