Galesburg man charged for burglarizing former St. Mary’s Square

Galesburg Police on Monday responded to the 200 block of South Cherry Street – the site of St. Mary’s Square for a report of a burglary. When officers arrived they met with the complainants who said they observed three individuals exiting the building. At that point, a 61-year-old Galesburg man came around the corner wearing gloves and a bicycle light while carrying a large bent copper pipe. No other individuals were located in or around the building. The man told police he saw the pipe outside and took it. The man said he was wearing gloves because he was “cold” and the light was for his bike despite it being 60 degrees and sunny conditions. The man was taken into custody. The complainants told police the man was NOT one of the individuals they saw leaving the building. Galesburg Police will have increased patrols in the area. The man was transported to the Knox County Jail and charged with burglary.
