Galesburg receives $650,000 grant to fix up homes. Here’s who is eligible

More than a half million dollars in federal grant money is headed to Galesburg to help fix up homes.

Gov. JB Pritzker and the Illinois Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity on Wednesday announced that Galesburg will receive a $650,000 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) for Housing Rehabilitation.

A total of $8.9 million has been awarded to 14 communities, which will support housing rehabilitation projects.

Steve Gugliotta, director of Community Development, tells WGIL  the program is for single-family, owner-occupied housing and rehabilitation that addresses mechanical, structural, energy efficiency and other associated rehabilitation activities.

Housing rehabilitation grants are designed to assist low-to-moderate income homeowners with improvements to ensure safe and sanitary living conditions. Eligible uses of funds include structural work, electrical, plumbing, new appliances, flooring, ADA, and accessibility accommodations, and more.

According to Gugliotta, the grant will focus on properties located in the southwest portion of Galesburg, and is generally bounded by both sides of Tompkins Street to the north, South Henderson Street to the west, Fifth Street to the south and the railroad tracks to the east.

The information also will be posted on the City of Galesburg website on its Housing Grants page. Interested parties may sign up to receive an e-alert when new housing grant information is posted on the city’s website.
