A national restaurant chain known for freaky fast sandwiches is expected to open in Monmouth this fall.

Brian Haberman, CEO of Mercurialis Holdings in Des Moines, Iowa, tells WGIL his company has acquired property and will build a Jimmy’s Johns at 522 N. Main St. in Monmouth.

The new Jimmy John’s will have a seating capacity of 10, but according to Haberman will be more geared toward drive-thru, mobile pickups and carryout orders.

“Monmouth certainly fits our demographics, especially in terms of population,” Haberman said. “A 10,000 population town is a good fit for Jimmy John’s. And to have Monmouth College in town is a big bonus.”

Mercurialis Holdings owns 27 Jimmy John’s restaurants and is in the process of building 16 more stores across Illinois, Iowa and Missouri. It does not own the Jimmy John’s in Galesburg.

The developer is in the process of completing final design for the project. Monmouth City Administrator Lew Steinbrecher said the city has been in contact with Mercurialis Holdings and expects to process building permits soon after they are received.

“We got the dirt to build on — we just have to obtain the permits,” Haberan said. “City administration has been very accommodating and willing to get that done in a timely fashion.

“We’re hoping to be open in the September to October timeframe.”
