Williamsfield CUSD 210 is alerting families to a cybersecurity breach affecting Canvas, the online learning platform used by the district and thousands of schools across the country.
In a notice posted May 8, Superintendent David Mills said the breach involved Instructure, the company that operates Canvas. A cybercriminal group known as ShinyHunters gained unauthorized access to Instructure’s systems beginning around April 29, 2026, and has claimed to have obtained records tied to students, teachers, and staff from approximately 9,000 educational institutions.
On May 7, Instructure temporarily took portions of Canvas offline as a precautionary measure while the investigation continues.
Mills said the district has no evidence that data belonging to Williamsfield students or staff was part of what was accessed, but added that a definitive determination cannot be made while the investigation is ongoing.
Depending on the institution, information potentially at risk may include names, email addresses, and other account-related details.
The district is recommending families take the following precautions:
- Be alert to unusual emails, texts, or calls claiming to be from the school or Canvas — do not click unfamiliar links.
- If your child uses the same password for Canvas as for other accounts, consider changing those passwords.
- Monitor accounts for any unusual activity.
Families with questions are asked to contact Jared Lynn at jared.lynn@billtown.org.
The district says it will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as more information becomes available.
