East St. Louis Students Fed During Teachers Strike

EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (AP) — Schools officials say East St. Louis students will still be transported to their schools to be fed while teachers are on strike.

Superintendent Art Culver said starting Friday students will be bused to their schools, given a hot breakfast and take-home lunch. The district has about 6,100 students.

Teachers went on strike Thursday.

Culver says he wanted to make sure that students were fed nutritious meals.

About 400 teachers and staff went on strike Thursday. Sharon Crockett is president of Union Local 1220. She says union members voted down a tentative agreement from the district on Tuesday evening. East St. Louis District 189
