Mark Thomas reflects on 20 years as Knox County coroner

Mark Thomas became deputy coroner for Coroner John Watson in 1998 and was elected to the first of his five terms as Knox County Coroner in 2004. His final day in office will be Sunday, Dec. 1, 2024.

Thomas joined WGIL's Jay Redfern and Tyler Gumm on Galesburg's Morning News to reflect on his 20 years in office.

He shares insights into the evolving responsibilities of the role, common misconceptions, and the emotional challenges of dealing with death. Thomas also highlights memorable cases from his career, what he will miss most about the position, and offers advice to his successor, Jacque Dare.
