A new scholarship has been established by Monmouth College alumni for first-year, first-generation college students.

Initiated by alums Nathan and Laura Gaskill, the scholarship would give preference to first-generation college-bound students from Warren, Mercer, Henderson, and Knox counties.

All recipients should be involved in Monmouth co-curricular activities and transfer students will also be eligible for the scholarship but first-year students will be given preference.

The scholarship was established after the Gaskills considered supporting Monmouth’s Light This Candle Campaign, which has a goal of raising a minimum of 75 million dollars for the school’s endowment by December 31st of next year.

Nathan was a first-generation student from the area who attended college at Monmouth and had concerns about being able to afford to continue his education at Monmouth.

With financial burden often being one of the barriers for entry, this scholarship can help lighten the load, says Laura Gaskill in a release from the college.

The couple created the Nathan and Laura Gaskill Accounting Prize in 2015 and they decided if they were going to make another gift, they’d want to help first-generation students.
