Illinois COVID-19 deaths top 5,000; new daily cases dropping

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) – Illinois’ death toll from the coronavirus pandemic now tops the 5,000 mark, including an Army Reservist from suburban Chicago who is the third member of the U.S. military to die from COVID-19. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office said that 34-year-old Sgt. Simon Zamudio of Carpentersville died last Friday. Cook County officials also announced that the medical examiner’s office has already investigated more deaths this year than in all of 2019. But as the state prepares this weekend to lift a stay-at-home order, there was good news. The 1,111 new COVID-19 cases reported was the lowest since April 6.
